An Ancient Beauty Secret
For centuries, women in Japan, China, and Southeast Asia have used rice water to wash and condition their hair. The Yao women of Huangluo Village in China, famous for their long, thick hair that retains its color past age eighty, credit their healthy hair to washing it with fermented rice water.
The Science of Rice Water
Rice water is rich in nutrients that benefit the hair structure, including:
- Inositol: A carbohydrate that can penetrate damaged hair and repair it from the inside out, remaining active even after rinsing.
- Amino Acids: The building blocks of keratin, which help strengthen the hair roots and add volume.
- Vitamins B, C, and E: Antioxidants that support scalp health and nourish the hair shaft.
"Fermented rice water has a slightly acidic pH, which helps smooth the hair cuticle and enhance natural shine."
How to Prepare and Apply
To prepare the rinse, rinse a cup of organic rice with water, then soak it in two cups of water for 30 minutes. Strain the rice and store the liquid in a glass jar. Let it sit at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours to ferment, allowing beneficial enzymes to develop. Boil it briefly to stop the fermentation, let it cool, and pour it over your hair after shampooing. Massage into the scalp and hair, leave for 10 minutes, and rinse thoroughly with cool water.
