What is Dry Brushing?
Dry brushing is a wellness practice that involves brushing dry skin with a natural-bristle brush, typically before bathing. It has roots in Ayurvedic medicine (known as Garshana) and ancient Greek and Roman bathing cultures, valued for its ability to exfoliate skin and support circulation.
Exfoliation and Skin Texture
As we age, the rate of natural skin cell shedding slows down, which can lead to dry, rough patches on the body. The mechanical action of dry brushing helps sweep away dead skin cells, encouraging cell renewal and leaving skin feeling softer.
"Dry brushing helps sweep away dry skin cells while supporting circulation and lymphatic flow."
How to Dry Brush Safely
To dry brush, use a firm, natural-bristle brush with a long handle. Brush on dry skin before showering, starting at your feet and brushing upward in long, gentle strokes toward the heart. Use circular motions on the joints, abdomen, and back. Keep the pressure light to avoid scratching, and rinse off in the shower afterward.
