The Lymphatic System and Puffiness

Unlike the cardiovascular system, which uses the heart to pump blood, the lymphatic system relies on muscle movement and breathing to move lymph fluid. Since the face has a dense network of lymph nodes, fluid can sometimes accumulate, leading to morning puffiness and a less defined appearance.

The Principle of Light Touch

Lymphatic vessels are located just beneath the surface of the skin. Applying heavy pressure can compress these vessels, blocking fluid flow. The key to lymphatic drainage is using very light, gentle sweeping strokes toward the lymph nodes in the neck and collarbone.

"Gentle, light sweeping strokes help support natural lymphatic drainage, helping reduce puffiness and define facial contours."

A Quick Facial Massage Sequence

Try this simple routine after applying a facial oil or cream to provide glide:

  • Neck Preparation: Gently sweep your fingers down the sides of your neck to the collarbone to open the drainage pathways.
  • Jaw and Cheeks: Place your fingers at the center of your chin and sweep outward toward the ears, then repeat from the sides of the nose out to the ears.
  • Eye Area: Use very light pressure with your ring finger to sweep from the inner corners of the eyes outward to the temples.
